Can We Use Other Superdrive For Macbook Air Rather Than The Apple Superdrive?

15 Feb

I recently bought a macbook air and need to purchase a superdrive for it. If I buy other USB superdrive will it work for the macbook air.
Thanks in advance.

As long as the 3rd party external CD/DVD drive supplies OS X drivers (either on the install disk or on the manu’s web site) you can use it. A buddy of mine uses a Pioneer CD/DVD/BluRay drive on his MBAir and it works fine (there were some issues with the BluRay at first, though – he fixed it with some software patches).
You can also wirelessly “share” the CD/DVD drive of another computer – both Mac or PC – as long as the computer hosting the drive has a WiFi card. That works great for installing software and ripping CD/DVD’s the to MBAir, but I don’t like the quality when streaming video from my iMac’s DVD drive to a MBAir – it’s best to rip the DVD first and then send the file to the MBAir. If you go to Apple.Com/Support you can find details on how to set up Optical Drive Sharing on both a PC and a Mac.

No. The MBAir only works with the approved Superdrive. If you have access to another mac, you can use it’s drive and stream over to the MBAir
